Staying Healthy

Have you ever thought you would stay healthy by running long distance and getting in really great shape? Being able to get in great shape by running would seem to be the ultimate way to stay healthy. So what could be the problem?
Do you remember Jim Fix, the great long distance runner who advocated long distance running as the best way to get in great shape and be really healthy. Then he dropped dead of a heart attack while he was running!
How healthy was he? Certainly he was in great shape. He seemed to know how to stay healthy. He had no symptoms of any ill health. He felt great. He had plenty of energy, etc.
Why did he suddenly die without any warning? Wouldn't we all appreciate it if our bodies would at least give us some warning that everything was not perfect? To just go from feeling terrific to being dead in less than a minute just does not seem possible.
Sometimes we do get a warning. When a disease has advanced so far that we notice it, such as a rash suddenly appearing on our skin, the damage inside has already been going on secretly for a long time. I say secretly, because our bodies are designed to silently struggle - to stay healthy, all the while pretending everything is fine.
Our bodies pretends as long as it can until it is so overwhelmed that it can no longer function in a particular area to stay healthy. When that function collapses, then the illness is so advanced that it shows up as an unpleasant symptom. Now it will take a much greater lifestyle change than if you had become aware of this pending illness sooner.
How do you stay healthy if your body is not warning you about the magnitude of its struggle to stay healthy? The answer is each of us has to educate ourselves on the six health pillars required to stay healthy. We need to learn what they are through research and then practice them correctly, consistently every day, even though we may feel perfect with no symptoms.
So why did Jim Fix suddenly die when he was in great shape while he was running?
Our bodies are extremely efficient at adjusting to accommodate what you are doing - in order to better serve you. When you are running everyday at a steady pace, your body adjusts itself to be a better long distance steady runner. It reduces the upper body muscles because they do not contribute to being a better long distance runner.
The lighter your body, the more efficient it can run. It eliminates your excess capacity in your lungs and eliminates your ability to exert yourself when necessary because with long distance running you do not need the ability of have unused excess capacity.
You are fine until you need to use excess capacity. Then your body has no way of providing the excess capacity, so instead it collapses and dies because it can not supply the extra energy needed to do the task you are attempting to perform. Somehow, Jim Fix had stressed himself requiring him to use excess capacity, and he did not have any.
Someone who worked for my father who seemed to be staying healthy suddenly died of an unexpected heart attack while trying to push a stalled car out of an icy snow pile. He never did anything that required any excess capacity to develop.
The very best way to expand your excess capacity is to raise your heart beat through interval training. For beginners, you slowly warm up for 2 minutes (walking, stair steps, etc), exert yourself for 15 seconds to get out of breath, - then slow way down but do not stop for 30 seconds. Repeat this cycle about 5-7 times every other day for a while, and then increase the length of time for the intensity and the recovery according to what you are comfortable doing.
During the exertion phase you want to just get a little out of breath. During the recovery phase you want to be able to get your breath back to normal so you can talk without gasping. Of course, you should check with your doctor before starting any interval training. Interval training will get you in shape quickly and actually contribute to staying healthy
Correct interval training is a very important piece of your quest to stay healthy.
